Day 3: 7 April 2008

April 7th, 2008

After moving back to the right of the AC again, Big Frank and Linda have yet again relocated to the left side. Their nest-building efforts seem rather futile: almost every stick that Big Frank brings back ultimately ends up falling off the WS, and so far, nothing of substance has been built yet. If it’s true that eggs are laid 8-12 days after mating (1), our friends have a lot of work ahead of them.

Day 2: 6 April 2008

April 6th, 2008

Our only opportunity for observing our neighbors was at night, with a maglight. Big Frank and Linda were sleeping on the WS, under the AC. No response to the maglight shining on them.

Day 1: 5 April 2008

April 5th, 2008

9am - Jon observed Big Frank and Linda with twigs in their usual spot by the AC. Nest building initially began on the right side of the WS, in the corner.
1pm - Big Frank and Linda disappeared for a while, then returned to start rebuilding their nest on the left side of the WS, by the AC. This was where we’d seen them hanging out most of the time, before nest-building was initiated today.

Background

April 1st, 2008

Big Frank and Linda have inhabited the Air Conditioner (AC) & Window Sill (WS) across the alleyway dividing buildings 45-45 and 45-35 46th St. since Jonathan and I moved into our apartment, in early March 2008. Initially, Jon and I were annoyed by their presence, because it meant dealing with poop-encrusted window sills of our own. However, after several weeks’ time, we not only became acquainted with Big Frank and Linda, but have also now become thoroughly engrossed with the upcoming arrival of their young ones. Indeed, they make an excellent substitution for televised entertainment - and they aren’t quite the bothersome feces-dropping neighbors we initially thought them to be.
